What If Your Ice Maker Dispensed Candy?

Have you ever thought, “Gee, you know what? I wish my fridge’s ice dispenser was actually a candy dispenser?” I honestly can’t say that I have — but maybe I’ve been missing something all these years, because yesterday, an enterprising Redditor actually made it happen. Is it ridiculous? Yes. Is it also glorious? Heck yes.

It all started when Redditor dericpeace posted a photo of his refrigerator’s ice bin filled not with ice, but with individually wrapped mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. “As a grown man,” the post’s subject line read, “I thought this was a better use for my ice maker… frozen candy dispenser!” As anyone who has ever thought to stick their favorite candy bar in the freezer knows, frozen chocolate is far superior to regular chocolate; as such, this idea actually makes perfect sense.

I spotted the initial picture right after dericpeace posted it the other day — although I’ll admit that I didn’t stop to think too much about it. After all, anyone can empty out an ice bin and fill it with candy; I often subscribe to the “pics or it didn’t happen” philosophy, so until I saw the fridge candy dispenser in action, I wasn’t going to fall too head over heels with it. For the curious, here’s what it looked like:

As I found out this morning via the Daily Dot, however, the Reddit community had a huge reaction to the photo; this, in turn, prompted dericpeace to go ahead and provide not pictures, but something better: a video. And you know what? It works. The dang thing actually works. Here, check it out:

Mind. Blown.

In the day or so since then, Reddit just hasn’t been able to get enough of the frozen candy dispenser and its creator. Dericpeace even did a brief AMA about the project. Its main description is currently listed as having been removed, but the thread itself is still readable if you’re curious. Here, for example, is how he came up with the idea:

And as for warning guests before they try to use the ice maker?

Personally, I would probably never get tired of people getting taken by surprise by an ice machine that dispenses candy instead, but maybe that’s just me.

But of course, the real question everyone wanted answered was this: Does it work if you set the ice maker to the crushed setting? OP, as they say, delivered this morning. After swapping out the wrapped candy for some unwrapped ones — M&Ms and the like — he gave it a shot, filming it as he went. So did it work? Well…

Kind of, yeah. As he remarks, it’s a little messier; the M&Ms also don’t look super crushed, but eh. Details. He’s probably right when he says that it would likely work fabulously for ice cream toppings, although it’s anyone’s guess how frequently you’ll have to deep clean the thing.

I feel like this is one of those things that kids always say they’re going to do when they’re adults and no longer have anyone policing their behavior — “When I grow up, I’m totally filling my ice maker with candy. That would awesome!” — but never actually follow through on when they finally get old enough. Dericpeace, however? He definitely gets points for this one. All that Halloween candy has to go somewhere, right? Well played, sir. Well played, indeed.
