Who Is "Wonderland" About?

by Quinn Keaney

If you haven't already heard the news, Taylor Swift's new album, 1989, is out! Not only that, but it's fantastic. Like, really, really fantastic. Tay-Tay's decision to go full-on pop diva for her fifth album was a risk, but the record is full of fun, danceable, can't-get-them-out-of-your-head-no-matter-what-you-do songs. You know what else it might be (and probably is) full of? Countless references to Harry Styles. It's common knowledge that "Out Of The Woods" was written about him, and another track called "Style" is practically begging listeners to think of the One Direction heartthrob with lyrics describing the guy with "long hair, slicked back," and wearing a "white t-shirt." Is 1989 bonus track "Wonderland"also about Harry Styles? Let's hope not.

I love Taylor's honest, open approach to song writing, but dedicating basically an entire album to the brief relationship she had with Harry? Sigh. It just seems a little much. "Wonderland" is an amazing song, however, and definitely worth the extra price that yields a deluxe edition of her album. The lyrics that could possibly be referencing Mr. Styles are below:

"Didn't they tell us don't rush into things?Didn't you flash your green eyes at me?Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds?"
"Didn't they tell us don't rush into things? Didn't you flash your green eyes at me?Didn't you calm my fears with the Cheshire cat smile?"

The most obvious clue is the "green eyes" call out in the lyrics, which happens to be the same eye color as Harry's. Not to mention, the rest of the Alice In Wonderland-reference heavy song talks about her being in a naive bubble with a guy in a short-lived relationship. Kind of sounds like the somethin'-somethin' she had with him, no?

While the "green eyes" lyric could be telling, there are a few other reasons why she slipped it in. When she says, "flash your green eyes," she could simply be referring to the Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland. Also, Tay is wont to call out "green eyes" in her songs. She mentions the same trait in "Sparks Fly," "I'm Alright" (which was supposedly also about Styles), and finally her collaboration with Ed Sheeran, "Everything Has Changed."

Maybe she just has a thing for green eyes? Everyone has a type. Even if "Wonderland" is about Harry Styles, though, there's no denying that the track is kickass, as is the rest of her album. Bravo as usual, Taylor. Also, maybe date someone with blue eyes next time around? Or brown? Might work out better for you.
