Pharrell's Adidas Ad = More Epic That His Hats

by Tyler Atwood

These days, Pharrell Williams wears many hats — and that's not just an allusion to the 2014 Grammys. Women's Wear Daily broke the news that Pharrell's latest Adidas Originals ad campaign emphasizes equality over consumerism, along with introducing two creative new products. The performer's newest Adidas offerings are a nearly-neon incarnation of the classic Stan Smith sneaker and a glamorous track jacket rendered in leather or satin — but the real story is Pharrell's egalitarian ad campaign.

Pharrell has a history of providing the world with joyous melodies (of which Happy is a prime example), entertainment, (under which category Blurred Lines falls), and fashion. His latest Adidas campaign combines these three factors in one incredibly altruistic tagline: "Equality Is Acceptance". The Adidas Originals Instagram reinterpreted the line as "Equality Is Love". The campaign depicts a group of white tee and sneaker-clad youths lined up in the configuration of an "equal" sign. After hiring a diverse group of models for the campaign, photographer Ryan McGinley kept the ad's emphasis on uniformity and balance. So snap up a pair of Adidas's new felt sneakers or a leather jacket when the products debut on October 31, and know that indulging in a bit of impulse shopping is all in the name of equality and love.
