Should We Prepare to Kiss Party Dresses Goodbye?

by Erin Mayer

For as long as I can remember, the ultimate "going out" ensemble was the skintight knock-off Hervé Leger body con dress. But the times, they are a'changin' — a new study conducted by Voucher Codes Pro. has found that skinny jeans are now the most popular clothing item for going out.

According to the study, cited by Gina Marinelli of Refinery 29, dresses are now the third go-to for party outfits, beat out by the aforementioned skinny jeans and also jumpsuits. I'm honestly pretty shocked that jumpsuits triumphed over dresses, but it makes sense. Dresses tend to be rather constricting, which is a huge bummer when you're trying to hit the dance floor. Both skinny jeans and one-pieces allow for more movement than a cling-tastic spandex-y dress would.

Marinelli sums up the study as such:

The Voucher Codes Pro study surveyed 2,156 women between the ages of 18 and 36, and a resounding 57% percent claimed that skinny jeans were their favorite for nighttime wear. Additional findings show that more than half the women surveyed own fewer dresses this year than last. And, women now prefer to party in red or blue hues. Sorry, LBDs of the world — this is just not your moment.

None of this is to say you should retire your favorite fancy dresses if that's what you're in to. But for those of you who want a more laid back look for evenings out, well, you're in luck! The most fascinating part of this study is perhaps that skinny jeans continue to reign supreme. We've been hearing for awhile that the skinny jean trend is dying and giving way to comfier styles like fashion sweats, harem pants, and boyfriend jeans. Yet, when it comes to finding the perfect Friday night look, it seems many women are sticking to Old Faithful.

I'm just glad that we've learned to embrace laid-back sex appeal so I can stop trying to cram my boobs into those knock-off Hervé Legers. Oh, who am I kidding? I never even bothered!
