One Direction Announced Their Next Single

by Kristie Rohwedder

It's been an exciting two weeks for Directioners: the "Steal My Girl" video premiered, a fresh batch of tour dates were announced, and the boy band revealed FOUR's next single. “Night Changes” will be One Direction’s second single off of their to-be-released album. Wednesday, the boy band shared this lil scoop with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1. I am AMPED. "Night Changes" is a great choice. (“But Kristie,” you interject. “How could you possibly know that’s a great choice? You haven’t heard the song.” Um, I can feel it. “Would you have said ‘great choice’ no matter which song they picked?” *Sigh.* Probably. You caught me.) I don't know when the song or the music video will drop, but I do know the following: 1) Harry Styles told Mills that "Night Changes" is his favorite track off of the new album, and 2) In an interview with MTV News, 1D songwriter Jamie Scott revealed that title was inspired by a squabble he had with co-writers/producers Julian Bunetta and John Ryan.

"I'm listening," I muttered at the interview as it played on my computer screen. "Please continue."

Scott explained that he, Bunetta, Ryan, and "the boys" (I'm going to go out on a crazy limb and assume 1D are "the boys") work together in the recording studio at Scott's house. Scott has a baby, so he usually leaves the studio before midnight. “But these guys just work through the night,” he told MTV News. “And one night, I came down to the studio, and three songs that I thought were sounding amazing when I left had been changed drastically through the night.”

These night changes didn’t sit well with Scott and he ended up calling Bunetta and Ryan “a name” that he wouldn’t to repeat for MTV News.

(Don’t worry. Scott said he patched things up with Bunetta and Ryan. EVERYTHING IS FINE, Y'ALL.)

"Wait," I mumbled at the interview. "Is 'Night Changes' literally about getting pissed off about changes made to songs in the middle of the night? Is it a song about the stressful process of writing that song? How meta!"

But before I could get too fired up, Scott set me straight:

The song is nothing about that, but the idea and the word came from me coming in the morning, because you get a bit delirious and you never quite know what you’re doing.

Ah. I see. Back to square one, we are. Don't know what "Night Changes" is about. But hey, no matter what the lyrics are (my guess: a story about some sort of Animorphs/werewolf sitch), I'm sure the song is terrific. I mean, Styles loves it. That pretty much guarantees I'll love it. Styles's hold on me is real.
