The Most Popular Halloween Candy In Each State

I know it's hard to believe, but there is more to trick-or-treating than Snickers, Milky Way, Butterfingers, or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. In fact, depending on which part of the country you hail from, War Heads, Ring Pops, and Bubble Tape reign supreme. No, we haven't time-traveled back to the '90s; according to a new map that breaks down which Halloween candy is most popular in each state, these throwback treats are making a comeback.

Website SumoCoupon (the same one that showed us which Halloween costumes are most popular in each state) has done a little number crunching to figure out which types of candy are trending across the country, and while traditional treats like chocolate continue to take top honors in many states (Kit Kats are beloved by llinois, Mississippi, Nevada and Wyoming), this year people are getting a little creative with their Halloween options — in California, for instance, wax lips appear to be the treat du jour.

To conduct its super important, scientific Halloween research, SumoCoupon looked at Google Search Volume to figure out which candy search terms were most popular in each state. For those states that had two candies tied in first place, SumoCoupon chose the candy that seemed the most unique (OK so maybe this isn't the most scientific of methods, but it's still pretty fun, right?).

Some of the results were surprising. Candy corn, for instance, that polarizing Halloween treat that is either the best or the worst thing to ever assault your taste buds depending on who you talk to, was the number one trending candy in Montana, North Dakota, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Air Heads are still popular in Florida, and if you live in Utah or Hawaii, chances are you have a soft spot for gummy bears.

Kids in Ohio can expect caramel apples in their trick-or-treat bags, and Iowans, for whatever reason, are bonkers over Rolos.

And then there were the findings that were truly scary. Raisins (raisins!!) are the most searched-for candy in Maryland AND Vermont (what?), and eager trick-or-treaters in New Mexico will dump out their candy bags this year to find them full of... pencils.

While some of SumoCoupon's findings seem sketch, there are a few important takeaways to be had here:

The '90s Were The Best Years of Everyone's Lives

The fact that Bubble Tape is even trending at all is proof that the '90s will never die, because honestly did anyone even really like Bubble Tape? No. We just like talking about it.

Contrary to Popular Belief, There's More To Halloween Than Peanut Butter Cups

Universally believed to be the most popular of any candy, any time of year, these were only trending in three states. Nothing makes sense to me anymore.

Don't Go Trick-Or-Treating in Maryland or Vermont

Because raisins? Seriously?!

Of course, if Halloween candy isn't really your thing anyway, there are other options. Chocolate covered pumpkin Twinkies, anyone?
