New 'RoboCop' Movie Actually Looks Great

by Lindsay Mannering

If you're a huge fan of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 RoboCop, you may not be thrilled to learn that there's a RoboCop reboot set to hit theaters Feb. 7, 2014. But the new flick, starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, and Samuel L. Jackson, isn't a copycat of its '80s predecessor. Director José Padilha said in an interview with Hero Complex that he "didn’t try to redo it because it’s impossible. It’s already been done. It’s great. It’s a genius movie." Instead, they've given Kinnaman's RoboCop a new backstory, as well as an updated suit. Plus, there's Samuel L. Doesn't that make everything better?

Surprisingly enough, the RoboCop reboot trailer has gotten some love on Twitter. What seems like a prime subject matter for attack — it's too different from the original! it's too similar to the original! his helmet has a red stripe! — is getting praise instead of complaints. If the Twitterverse loves something before it hates something, that's an excellent, if not completely unheard of sign.

Ah, soon enough, a new generation of young boys and girls will have a robotic police officer to emulate when they play with toy laser guns in their backyards because what's old is new again. Quick, someone get me a RoboCop Trapper Keeper.
