Turns Out the Kardashians Are Good for Hollywood

by Rachel Simon

Breaking News: The Kardashians have contributed something not horrible to society for once. According to Bling Ring director Sofia Coppola, star Emma Watson was inspired by the reality stars when developing her character's Calabasas accent after watching several episodes of their signature show, E!'s Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Said Coppola, "She took it seriously and made it her homework." Emma Watson, studying hard? Color us surprised.

But Watson isn't the first actor to take inspiration from the Kardashian clan. In April, The Great Gatsby star Carey Mulligan told Vogue that her character of Daisy Buchanan shares some similarities with the famed family. She said: "It's that kind of feeling: I'm-so-little-and-there's-nothing-to-me, watch-me-have-nothing-to-me. She feels like she's living in a movie of her own life. She's constantly on show, performing all the time. Nothing bad can happen in a dream. You can't die in a dream. She's in her own TV show. She's like a Kardashian."

Point: Mulligan. Still, while it's always fun to bash the reality stars, it seems the Kardashians might actually have a purpose in Hollywood other than making Ryan Seacrest filthy rich and inspiring this meme. Watson and Mulligan have both received praise for their character portrayals in their respective films; maybe taking inspiration from the Kardashians isn't as terrible an idea as it sounds. Think about it: All the things we make fun of the family for — their narcissism, their extravagance, their ridiculous, practiced way of speaking — are the stuff great characters are made of. Both Watson's character in The Bling Ring and Mulligan's Gatsby role are fantastic parts; they're rude and self-centered, yes, but they're not dumb. They know exactly what they're doing, and how to manipulate others. Sounds like a familiar reality TV family we know well.

Hopefully, inspiring A-list actors is the closest any of the Kardashians will get to the big screen anytime soon. (We're pretending this didn't happen.) We love nothing more than seeing our favorite smart, sophisticated celebrities play Valley Girl on screen, but as for the reality stars themselves? Let's hope they continue to stay far, far away.
