Scott Brown Calls His Daughter "Soft"

by Kate Ward

We knew not every midterm election day gaffe would be as chuckle-worthy as Missouri's Gov. Jay Nixon's. As BuzzFeed spotted via Guardian reporter Jon Swaine's Instagram, former Massachusetts U.S. Senator and current New Hampshire U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown insulted Ayla Brown, his daughter, at a campaign event. In front of reporters, presumably asking whether Brown could beat his daughter, a former NCAA basketball player, in a game of hoops, "I could probably beat her now, because she's gotten a little soft ... she still has sharp elbows, that's for sure." (The question is not included in the video.) And, in case you have no plans to watch the video, let it be known that Brown goes as far as to poke Ayla in the stomach during his answer.

Granted, Ayla could likely take the joke. After all, we're talking about a woman who has logged accomplishments that rival her father's. Not only was she a star on Boston College's Eagles team, but she also earned recognition nationwide for her musical skills when she competed on Season 5 of American Idol.

Still, Brown's reference to Ayla's looks is disappointing, but not unexpected. Brown has experienced quite a few gaffes in his political career. Not only was his own appearance subject to unfortunate mockery when an old nude Cosmopolitan spread of the politician was unearthed, but just two months ago, Brown told attendees at an American Bridge meeting, "Here's the thing, folks say, what are you going to do to create jobs? I am not going to create one job, it is not my job to create jobs. It's yours."

So, all we can say is... good luck New Hampshire?
