FOX's Comments About The Redskins Were Ignorant

by Suzanne Samin

The fight to change the name of the Washington Redskins has been gaining major momentum in the last few months, especially in the political arena. The team's moniker is considered one of the most racist names in American sports, cashing in on a derogatory term for Native Americans. However, some of FOX News' anchors aren't taking the whole matter too seriously, as they proved during a digression in their election coverage.

How did it come up during the poll watch? A conversation between anchors Brit Hume and Juan Williams digressed into how politicians should be focusing on "important issues," and not frivolous ones — like racism, apparently. Sigh. Williams mentioned his apprehension to use the team's name, due to its racist nature, and Hume promptly lambasted him for it.

“As someone who tries not to say the name of the Redskins… ” —Juan Williams“Oh PLEASE. It's Redskins, Redskins, Redskins, Juan. The Redskins won!” —Brit Hume

So as you can see, outside of Williams — who was the only non-white anchor during this round of FOX's election coverage — racial sensitivity isn't a very high political priority to these guys. On the other hand, the Redskins' refusal to change their name recently attracted over 5,000 protestors outside of one of their games. So, even if FOX News doesn't think its important enough to talk about, a whole lot of Americans do.
