Taylor Swift Slayed Those Record Sales

by Kadeen Griffiths

We all knew this was coming. We all listened to 1989. We all listened to Taylor Swift. She went from controversial figure (in the sense that you either loved her music or hated her music, loved her or hated her) to beloved feminist icon and New York City's Welcome Ambassador for Tourism in just a few months. Her new album was predicted to sell a million copies in its first week, so it's nice to have that finally confirmed officially by Billboard. According to them, Swift sold 1.3 million copies of 1989 in its debut week, making her the first artist to debut three albums to over a million sales in the first week and making this the best-selling album since 2002. Not bad.

How does one go about celebrating news that amazing? According to Swift herself, industry experts predicted she would only sell about 650K in her first week with 1989. That seems completely laughable now that we have all held the album in our hands or on our iTunes, but this album did present a huge departure, and thus a huge risk, for Swift that totally paid off. Because the pop singer is, well, the most Swift-y person in the world, she celebrated with an Instagram video of her rapping Kendrick Lamar. (Ironically, Lamar just did a cover of "Shake It Off" this week, making this ten times more adorable.)

However, morphing into our new favorite rapper is hardly the only thing that Swift should be doing to celebrate her intense success. Here are some other celebration ideas that she should totally do if she wants to give 1989's album sales the blowout party they deserve.

What are cats there for if not to join in the party? Olivia Benson and Meredith are probably already getting down to this sick beat, so if I don't get an Instagram video of Swift dancing to 1989 with both of them in her arms then I am going to be incredibly disappointed.

That already worked out for her once with the 1989 secret sessions and Swift has expressed an interest in meeting even more of her fans. Why not have an album sales celebration party at her house and invite some more select fans to come and party with her? And by select fans, I mean including me.

If ever there was a time for Swift to break out some of her awkward dance moves, then now would be that time.

I'm not saying I officially need Swift's next album in my hands already, but I officially need Swift's next album in my hands already. No rush. She has a tour to think about and first week sales to celebrate. But you know what's my idea of a party? More Swift music. Just saying.
