Is She Your Next Captain Marvel?

by Alanna Bennett

The world has long been in need of more female-led superhero movies and now, Marvel may be taking its first baby-steps to making that dream a reality: According to some tantalizing hints offered by Battlestar Gallactica's Katee Sackhoff in a recent interview, that superhero may be Captain Marvel, and that Captain Marvel might be played by her.

Despite the public interest in a Wonder Woman or a Black Widow movie, there's been little to make fans believe that either DC or Marvel will make that happen. Marvel producer/director Louis D’Esposito has now indicated that it's something that Marvel's actually paying attention to:

"There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero ... We have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”

So it's not exactly a green light — it's only vaguely more hopeful hedging than the "Well Wonder Woman just hasn't found the right screenwriter yet" excuses we've been hearing from DC for years. In fact, this rumor wouldn't be anything worth noting ... if it weren't for Katee Sackhoff. Sackhoff, who is currently making the rounds doing press for Riddick, sat down with the podcast Schmoes Know recently and when asked about if Marvel or Disney had approached her for any mysterious projects that would make nerds shiver with anticipation, she basically said yes. Take a look at Bleeding Cool's transcription:

Um… There’s been some stuff going on. Um… there’s been a lot of checking of availability… I don’t quite know exactly… I don’t know… there’s been a lot of questions about the first quarter of next year and then the…

It reads quite clearly there but if you listen to the actual audio, they talk all over her and, at the end, cut her off. She had more to add but the hosts prevented it coming out.

All geek-signs point to Sackhoff being absolutely perfect to play Captain Marvel, so for now that's what we're all assuming Marvel's getting at. Sackhoff's got quite the action cred, too, so that's a huge plus when it comes to the studio betting on her to deliver. At this point all we know concretely is that they're interested in her for something. So unless scheduling or something presumably better comes along—in these cases we'd advice Sackhoff to clear her effing schedule and Marvel to get their heads out of their butts—we're taking the recklessly optimistic route and already marking our imaginary 2016 calendars for Captain Marvel.
