Esther's Sister Is The Real Evil

by Christine DiStasio

All evil starts somewhere, my friends. And, in the case of The Originals, it's all in the family. (I didn't really need to tell you that, Originals fan, right?) Monday night's episode of The Originals revealed Esther's past and why she tried to kill baby Hope and it's all pretty screwed up. Like, if you thought Esther and Mikael wanting to kill all of their children was screwed up, you were definitely as surprised as I was while watching "The Wheel Within The Wheel." Apparently, Esther Mikaelson has a sister named Dalia who's an even scarier and more powerful witch than she is. Because that's exactly what we all need right now.

I'm far from feeling sorry for Esther, considering how I've been forced to watch her torture Elijah for the past two episodes of The Originals. And, really, that's just the tip of the iceberg when you think about all of the other terrible things she's done to her children over the years. But "The Wheel Within The Wheel" tried its best to make us realize that Esther didn't start out this way — evil witch Esther is just a product of an evil sister that we've never heard of before. Don't worry, though, because Dalia apparently has all of the power she needs to rise from her resting place to come claim baby Hope. Excellent.

Here's the deal, Dalia seems like she was a straight-up evil witch from the very beginning — complete with elitist attitude towards her sister who tried to avoid practicing magic. In a flashback during Monday night's Originals, Esther went to Dalia for help when she couldn't conceive a child. Dalia berated her sister for not practicing magic and not being able to help herself but, apparently, helped her sister anyway. And, because all magic comes with a price, Dalia came and took Esther's first born child — a daughter named Freya — and revealed that because of the deal Esther made with her to conceive, Dalia was owed Esther's first born and the first born of all of her children.

So, what does that mean? Well, that Dalia is coming for baby Hope and also that Esther tried to kill the baby in Season 1 to protect her from whatever Dalia plans to do with the child. Are you creeped out yet? Well, here's another thought — The Vampire Diaries and The Originals have stuck by this idea that Esther made her children immortal to keep them safe from werewolves, but what if she did it so that they couldn't have children? And so that they couldn't suffer the same pain she did when she lost Freya? That would also make sense of the fact that she suppressed Klaus' werewolf gene — werewolves can reproduce, but vampires can't.

None of this justifies Esther becoming an evil creature, but if she fears Dalia, we should all be very, very afraid.
