Cecily Will Be the Perfect WHCA Dinner Host

by Daniela Cabrera

One of my favorite funny ladies on SNL has been tapped for a cool new gig. Cecily Strong is hosting the 2015 White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25, 2015. Strong will be the featured entertainer at the dinner, which in the past has always been a testosterone fest. In fact, our girl is only the FOURTH woman in the 82 year history of the dinner to host, following performances by Paula Poundstone, Elayne Boosler, and Wanda Sykes in the past. I honestly think this is a HUGE step for Strong, considering that her fellow ubiquitous SNL alums, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, have never hosted the event themselves (although, we know they've got the goods after the Golden Globes). In a statement, the WHCA's president Christi Parsons stated the reason for the brilliant choice:

Her political humor is sly and edgy, and it comes with a Chicago accent. Journalists are always fair game at the WHCA dinner, but Cecily comes with a special working knowledge of the crowd.

After being the host of SNL's Weekend Update, I think Strong has earned her place to stand on stage and just go in on politicians of the highest caliber. I honestly couldn't think of anyone better to do this job right now, so let's see all the reasons that she is qualified to the be the lady to do it.

She can start a conversation

I don't know about you, but wouldn't you love to see uptight politicians completely confused at the drunken ramblings of the "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party?" I can already picture the nervous laughter.

She's got some ties to the crowd

Her father, Bill Strong, is a former Associated Press bureau chief at the Illinois Statehouse.‎ I think this means she can coax out some dirt from her connections, but nothing too bad, you know...

She's young & fabulous

As much as I didn't want to point out the obvious, I think it's amazing that a woman this young and ambitious will stand alone on a stage in front of a room of stuffy politicians. Go 'head, girl.

She's a "comedy nerd"

Over the years, the WHCA dinner (and the week-long events that surround it) have become known as the "Nerd Prom," and the focus is less on politics than on the star-studded event. But as a self professed nerd (once describing herself as a total comedy nerd as a kid,) Strong will fit right in with the fellow attendees — albeit dressed a bit more conservatively than those of the other so-called Nerd Prom, San Diego Comic Con. Maybe she can host while dressed as an Avatar? That'll get people talking.
