5 Seconds of Summer Rocks the AMAs

Move over, One Direction. There's a new band of cute musical boys on the scene and they're called 5 Seconds of Summer (or 5SOS for short). Of course Harry Styles and Co. would know that — the Aussie group opened for the Brit band's tour last summer and since then, 5SOS's song "She's So Perfect" has been climbing music charts worldwide. The foursome actually started out covering songs on YouTube and quickly became an internet sensation. At Sunday night's American Music Awards, 5 Seconds of Summer took the stage and performed their rocking cover of the 80s classic "What I Like About You."

The Aussie boys' energetic performance of the Romantics' 1979 single kept it simple and loud with a red background, hot pink guitars, punk hair, and some audience grooving. The guitars were blaring (even the pink one) and the boys were in full rock-n-roll mode — totally not what we expected from a boy band. They've been wanting to be just known as a band, not a "boy band" — is that why didn't they go with "She's So Perfect"? Well, 5SOS wanted to perform a fan favorite from their concerts for the mostly-fan driven awards show.

“It’s been a fan favorite song, and we closed our concert with it," bandmember Michael Clifford told MTV. "It’s a cover of The Romantics, and it’s so fun, it’s probably the most fun.”

The boy group is nominated for the New Artist of the Year Presented By Kohl's, facing off against Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Meghan Trainor, and Sam Smith. Even if they don't pull off a win, these cute rockers are going places — 5SOS will headline their own world tour next summer. But one question remains: When will chart-topper and Dick Clark Award-winner Taylor Swift write a song about one of the 5SOS guys? That's when you'll know these Aussies have really made it.
