Congratulations, One Direction!

by Maitri Suhas

Winning their third award of the night, One Direction took Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards on Sunday, sending Twitter into a spitfire frenzy. The group took the biggest prize of the night, beating out Iggy Azalea, Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and BEYONCE. I'm a little taken aback that Nicki Minaj didn't make the list after so many blowout moments this year, but a lot of times, award show nominees just don't make sense to your average viewer.

Though One Direction were so cute in their acceptance speech, they did have quite a few tough opponents. Iggy Azalea undoubtedly ruled the airwaves this year, especially with that damn "Fancy" (which is now pulsing through my brain), Katy Perry stirred the pot, Luke Bryan became a big name in country, and Beyoncé... was BEYONCE. In the end, though, One Direction's boyish charm, I suppose, just couldn't be beat.

1D also took home the prizes for Favorite Pop/Rock Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album, and delivered an electric performance of "Night Changes" (which wholly delighted Bustle's Christine DiStasio). But they still had their share of fun: they were even rumored to have been moved from their front row seats because they were tripping people walking by in the aisles. Precious. Congratulations, One Direction!
