You Can Still Watch 'Selfie' Online

by Kadeen Griffiths

Selfie got a lot of flack for being one of the worst fall shows out there, but most if not all of it was incredibly undeserved. Karen Gillan and John Cho gave admirable performances in a deliberately silly work that was meant to be entertaining, but somehow fell flat with critics and audiences. Why, yes, I have been waiting a long time to say that in an article. Regardless of my personal feelings, ABC cancelled Selfie and stopped broadcasting the rest of the episodes on television, which kind of leaves fans of the show in a bind. This news came as a heavy blow particularly since it happened so soon after Eliza and Henry finally felt the spark of will they-won't they that could have carried us through many seasons to come. So, where can you watch Selfie online now that it's been cancelled?

Luckily, we have options. Although the final on-air episode of Selfie was broadcast on ABC on November 11, the show has found a new online home — Hulu. Showrunner Emily Kapnek announced on Twitter on Monday that the first of the six episodes still left in Season 1 of the show would be broadcast on Hulu, Hulu+, and ABC's website. If you don't want to get stuck with an intense case of #FOMO, then you'd better start planning your day around streaming the show on one of those three sites.

The remaining episodes will be broadcast on a weekly basis until the season — and series — finale in five weeks. Maybe if we bring enough traffic to Hulu in Selfie's honor, then ABC might consider picking the show back up again. Alternatively, maybe if we bring enough traffic to Hulu in Selfie's honor, they might ask Kapnek for a second season to air exclusively on the website. I like to believe this could happen, because I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to Insta-famous Eliza Dooley and the reserved, Internet-deficient Henry just yet. I'm not ready to say goodbye to this feminist twist on a sexist classic. I'm not ready to say goodbye to a television version of Urban Dictionary, because Selfie was teaching me all the youth slang.

Selfie might have been silly, shallow, and frequently ridiculous, but it soon grew out of that into great character development, emotional depth, and plot nuance. I acknowledge that it might have done all of this a little too late, but I'm still excited to see where Kapnek goes with the rest of the season. Not just because I enjoyed seeing Gillan and Cho on my television every week, and basking in the amazing chemistry the two had with each other, but because I loved these characters almost as much as they were growing to love each other. #sadface that Selfie didn't manage to connect with audiences, but insert smilie here that it's being given new life online. The show definitely deserves it.
