Sorry Fans, Taylor Won't be Playing Joni Mitchell

by Rachel Semigran

Whenever I'm in the mood to listen to the music of Taylor Swift or Joni Mitchell, it's because I'm in one of those "I"m having a lot of feelings and don't give a crap how I show them" moods. You know, either weeping in front of a mirror to look at my own ugly cry face or letting out some scorned-lover rage on a kickboxing bag. As much as these two women have come to express the many complexities of the female heart and soul, the similarities are likely going to stop there. Back in 2012 it was rumored that Taylor Swift was going to play Mitchell in a biopic based on Sheila Weller's book Girls Like Us. The biography goes inside the life and careers of Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Mitchell let us know how she really felt about the project. "I squelched that! I said to the producer, 'All you've got is a girl with high cheekbones'. It's just a lot of gossip, you don't have the great scenes."

It's no surprise that Mitchell didn't want the film to be made. Jezebel reports that when Weller was writing the book, Mitchell refused to be interviewed.

As much as Mitchell pours her heart out into her music, she's quite private when it comes to discussing her life behind closed doors. Mitchell's story was then pieced together by friends and colleagues who knew her. She claims: "There's a lot of nonsense about me in books."

Whether or not Swift would have made a good Joni Mitchell seems irrelevant when the facts behind the story could have been totally misconstrued. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to listen to Joni Mitchell and think about the depths of my womanhood.
