New 'AHS: Coven' Photos Give Us A Few Clues

If that creepy trailer from a few days ago wasn't enough to get you pumped up for the fast-approaching premiere of American Horror Story: Coven, no worries: FX isn't done rolling out the promotional material just yet. Newly released through EW, the network has release promotional images from the new season, featuring Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett in full-on costume.

It may not seem like much, but it's a great first look at how they'll embody their characters, who are very real historical figures: Kathy Bates is portraying the Louisiana socialite-turned-serial killer Delphine LaLaurie (who's known for the torture and murder of many black slaves), and Angela Bassett is taking on the role of Marie Laveau, a well-known Creole voodoo practitioner.

Also revealed along with the photos were a few more plot details:

In Coven’s universe, [Jessica] Lange’s glam Fiona is the Wicked Witch of the West. Labeled a “Supreme” for her mighty magical abilities, Fiona is witch royalty, descended from Salem spell casters, and has spent recent years using her powers to stay fabulous, like any good aging diva. The murder of a young Salem witch near New Orleans inspires Fiona to return home from L.A., where she’s been living the high life, and reunite with her estranged daughter, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), the headmistress of Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. [...] The student body — and witchy bloodline — is dwindling due to coven members fearful of reproducing and passing on their powers as well as forces determined to destroy the lineage.

The plot will focus on two warring 'covens' of witches: The Salem witches, and the voodoo witches, who were in New Orleans first. While Fiona wants to prepare the girls at Cordelia's school for battle, Cordelia wants to keep things peaceful — thus causing a rift between mother and daughter.

AHS: Coven will premiere on FX on Oct. 9. You can check out the promo photos below.
