Patrick Wilson Was Wrong About This One

by Alanna Bennett

Patrick Wilson said rather unequivocally just a few days ago that it was "pretty clear" to him that there couldn't be another Insidious movie, but sorry, dude: It's happening. Insidious: Chapter 3 has been greenlit by the studio threesome of Entertainment One, FilmDistrict, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.

Insidious: Chapter 2 crushed it at the box office this weekend, raking in a healthy $41 million as one of the biggest-ever September openings for a film. The film stars Wilson and Rose Byrne as a haunted married couple.

In an interview with Indiewire last week, Wilson guessed that there'd be no clear way to move forward with his character after the second film, much less to convince director James Wan to do a third.

It took [Wan] so much to even want to do a sequel to Insidious, I felt like I could do a lot more with the character so he was my sort of touchstone, but I just... I don't know where else it could go, I don't know what he could come up with that would make it be interesting for both of us, for me, for Josh Lambert. Like, where else do you go with that guy? He's been through the ringer, and I think the movie sets it up well at the end, to be honest with you. And that's great, that's how it should end.

Regardless of Wan's or Wilson's feelings on the matter, Insidious: Chapter 3 is moving forward. It will be written by the films' past writer Leigh Whannel, although it has yet to be reported whether or not Wilson will sign on again to star in the third movie, which he is very publicly not looking forward to. If he does, at least he'll get a nice comfy pile of money to make his efforts worthwhile.
