Robyn Lawley Opened Up About Her Pregnancy Worries

by Erin Mayer

2014 is definitely the Year of the Stylish Baby. With so many fashion powerhouses expecting, from Coco Rocha to Eva Chen, we've gotten our fair share of chic maternity outfit snaps (especially during Fashion Month in September). But what goes on inside the mind of a pregnant fashion insider? We have some insight, thanks to an in-depth interview with Cosmopolitan in which Robyn Lawley opens up about her unexpected pregnancy and the concerns she has regarding her body and career once she becomes a new mom.

The 25-year-old model announced her pregnancy about a month ago and has remained pretty tight-lipped ever since. In her conversation with Cosmo's Lauren Chan, Lawley, who is signed with Wilhelmina Models, revealed that her pregnancy was "unplanned and came a little earlier than expected," but that she was ultimately thrilled to find herself expecting. Still, she considered having an abortion early on, saying, "as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I had to take all options into account, because with a baby, I'll have to majorly slow down — and I'm very career driven. That scared me."

What makes this interview so special is the fact that Lawley so freely discusses the ins and outs of pregnancy — why she was scared to tell her agency and her clients, what she eats on a day-to-day basis, what she plans to do in order to get back into shape after she gives birth. It's refreshing to see these issues laid bare, and humanizing to hear a stunning model share the same concerns that average women do.

I was actually looking at images from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show this morning on Instagram, and I was thinking two things. One is positive: It gives me confidence and inspiration that I can get my body back. Look at Doutzen, she has a six-pack! Had I not seen those models bounce back and return to work so quickly after having babies, I would have been more scared. There's another side of me that's like, "Oh god, there's so much pressure." I just don't know if my body's going to bounce back. All those models had really great core strength before they got pregnant, and I didn't. I don't know if my body will return like theirs did.

Somehow, I have plenty of faith that Lawley will be back and better than ever in no time. But it's important that people stop scrutinizing women's bodies so extensively, especially during pregnancy and after giving birth. Perhaps we need more conversations like this one, which reveal what women go actually through during these crucial nine months, instead of letting our obsession with the "post baby body" get the best of us.
