New York Protesters Storm Apple Store & Macy's

by Jenny Hollander

On Friday night, a third consecutive night of protests in New York City saw protesters staging "die-ins" — lying on the ground to demonstrate the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, and others — in Macy's and the 24-hour Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. Chanting "I can't breathe" and carrying signs and banners, largely peaceful protests condemning the police's role in the deaths of black men also took place in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cleveland, and a handful of other major American cities.

Throughout Friday evening, the protesters marched through central Manhattan. At the hallmark glass Apple store on Fifth Avenue, dozens entered and stood in circles, chanting "I can't breathe" — the last words of Eric Garner, repeated 11 times before his death — and "black lives matter." They went on to stage a "die-in" on the store's floor. In Macy's Herald Square — the location protesters visited last Friday in the hope of reducing Black Friday profits — the group did the same thing, going on to repeat their protests in New York landmarks Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, and Wall Street.

Although most of the protests in major American cities saw hundreds of people gathered, NBC reports that the New York crowd was noticeably smaller than it had been Thursday night, when thousands took to the streets and the NYPD made more than 200 arrests.
