Nutellasagna Is Here, And It's Delicious

by Marion Bernstein

As another year comes to a close, it's only natural that we take some much needed time to sit back and reflect on the best food mashups of 2014. From cronuts to cragels to Dorito-crusted pizza, by month 12 it's safe to assume we've seen, mashed, and eaten all the weirdness 2014 had to offer. But thankfully, it appears the Frankenfood gods aren't done with us just yet. Nutella and lasagna have come together to make sweet chocolatey layered love. That's right, nutellasagna is here and, as anticipated, it's in high demand.

Allison Robicelli, owner and namesake of the southern Brooklyn-based bakery Robicelli's, first created the hybrid for their Jump The Shark Summer campaign where bakers were tasked with turning out some of the craziest (and tastiest) food mashups of all time. Their culinary concoctions included such treasures as a deep fried duck fat cake coated in a bacon Sriracha glaze, and the "vafflecake" — stacked waffles slathered in sour cream custard topped with burnt sugar. Yes, it's officially OK to say you've died and gone to Frankenfoodie heaven, and that heaven exists in New York City.

But Nutellasagna just may be the holiest of holy matrimonies — lasagna noodles, cannoli custard, Nutella, chopped chocolate, roasted nuts, and homemade marshmallows toasted to a golden brown. The delicious hybrid sold so well over the summer that Robicelli had no choice but to succumb to public pressure and bring the inventive dessert back just in time for the holiday season.

And Nutellasagna really is the perfect addition to any holiday dessert table. But make sure you plan your food oddities ahead of time and reserve various sized trays accordingly. If you're hosting a smaller feast, Robicelli recommends the half tray that feeds 10 to 15 people for $65. Going big? Feed 15 to 24 guests with a full tray for $120. And if this deal didn't sound sweet enough already, you can order Nutellasagna online, so there's no excuse not to get in on this heavenly creation.

Too much holiday shopping on your plate this year? Well, New Yorkers are in luck because the bakery will deliver to Manhattan, Brooklyn, and select parts of Long Island and Queens. Looking to keep it simple with a single serving? You'll have to pay a personal visit to the Bay Ridge locale — but keep in mind these puppies are in high demand and sell out very quickly, so be sure to check Robicelli's Facebook page for baking updates before you make the worthwhile trek.
