Listen to Azealia Banks' New Jam

by Caroline Pate

A new Azealia Banks track has leaked, so does this mean we now know the release date for the two-years-in-the-making Broke with Expensive Taste? Will this track even be on that album? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding: nope!

Banks' new song, "Count Contessa," is from yet another upcoming album called Fantasea II: The Second Wave. And even though this project is newer than Azealia's supposed debut album, unlike Broke with Expensive Taste, Fantasea II: The Second Wave actually has a release date set for July 11, 2014.

The fact that a track has leaked from her next album should be frustrating, but it's a huge relief. Bank's last song released for Broke with Expensive Taste, "ATM Jam" with Pharrell, was somewhat of a disappointment. It's a song that feels like it should go somewhere but never really does, and it has a half-assed fancy lyrics video to go with it. It's one of the first high-profile collaborations for the much-buzzed-about rapper, but it has yet to hit 300,000 views.

But for "Count Contessa," Banks is back in her wheelhouse with mermaids and house ballroom jams. And it has some interesting lyrics which, according to Banks, describe the fictional battle between lesbian Count Contessa and Muscle Mike.

At this point, it feels like there's some weird kind of curse surrounding Broke with Expensive Taste. Its release has been delayed for two years, and the only tracks released from the album are the aforementioned lackluster "ATM Jam" and older tracks like "212."

But hey, even if that album is devoured by the nameless abyss that is show business, Fantasea II: The Second Wave will cushion the blow. So go ahead, listen to the sounds of future waves and party in the ocean with the ultimate mermaid princess. Leave the worrying to the land dwellers.
