Kimora Lee Simmons Is Designing Grown-Up Clothes

by Erin Mayer

When I was a preteen, I was intrigued by the Baby Phat selection in the Macy's Juniors department, solely because I thought the swirly cat logo was THE BEST EVER. I only ever had the balls to (ask my mom to) purchase one item, and I honestly don't remember anything about it, aside from the cat. Now, Kimora Lee Simmons is switching gears and designing wares for adults. Her new line, KLS Kimora Lee Simmons launches today and it's so ladylike! Grown-up me definitely approves.

According to The Cut, Simmons unveiled her pre-fall collection last Friday morning to a handful of editors in Chelsea and now her winter capsule collection is shoppable online. There's a healthy mix of the Old Kimora, seen in leather crop tops and body-con silhouettes, and the New Kimora, with tailored jackets and patterned trousers, priced between $500 and $2,400. “I guess you would call it putting out a new image, but I think it’s more of an evolution,” she told WWD. “I’m not the same woman now. KLS isn’t catering to a teenage audience or a young party girl. I’m a serious businesswoman.”

The designer may have turned a new corner in life — she's married to banker Tim Leissner and expecting a baby, due this April — but KLS is certainly true to her personality. There are plenty of loud prints and leather accents to off-set (but not undermine) the sophisticated vibe of the collection, plus a makeup-free ad campaign, starring Simmons and shot by photographer David Sims.

And as for that cat symbol, well, it's officially behind her. KLS boasts a simple logo of layered initials, strongly reminiscent of the iconic YSL insignia.
