'Snowpiercer' Looks Like 'Hunger Games' On Crack

It's not clear when Snowpiercer will actually be available for American audiences, but if you need some indication that it's one to watch (and anticipate greatly), consider this: It opened last month in its home country, South Korea, and quickly became the country's highest-grossing film ever, and, this new Snowpiecer trailer promises all sorts of awesome.

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer is based off of the French graphic novel series Le Transperceneige by Jean-Marc Rochette. The plot itself sounds complicated (and has a lot of commentary on everything from environmental issues to social structures), but it's really not: Snowpiercer depicts a sort of dystopian future where humanity was almost obliterated by an experiment meant to stop global warming, but instead of solving the problem, it sent the world into an ice age, killing nearly everyone on the planet.

The remaining survivors live on a train that's powered by a perpetual motion engine, which consists of 1,001 carriages and basically just takes them around the entire world over and over again.

What results is a vicious class system that keeps the poor separated from the rich, which gives way for the film to make some great commentary about social structures when the poor start a sort of revolution at their end of the trail (one that, for the record, kind of looks like The Hunger Games on steroids or something).

Chris Evans stars, wielding an axe, and Allison Pill looks pretty badass with a gun. Song Kang-ho, Go Ah-sung, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris also star. Cherry on top: The insanely talented director of the 2003 South Korean version of Oldboy, Park Chan-wook, is a producer.

Though the movie was acquired by The Weinstein Company back in 2012, there's no set release date — or even word on whether or not they plan to dumb the movie down for American audiences, which is apparently a REAL OPTION, smh — but with the release of this new international trailer, perhaps there's hope it'll be soon.
