Spring 2015's Biggest Trend Is A Shocker

by Tyler Atwood

When winter transforms the daily forecast into a haze of overcast skies and heavy snowfall, what could be better than anticipating the rich, brilliant hues of spring? Luckily for those trapped in a Polar Vortex II snow drift, one of the biggest fashion trends for Spring 2015 is looking sartorially sun-drenched. From platforms to purses, spring's most unanticipated trend is rainbow hues.

What sets the trend apart from the candy colors of seasons past? 2015's rendition is the couture form of Skittles' "Taste The Rainbow," offering several neon pops of color crammed into one accessory. If you possess a pair of cream colored pointy toe pumps, shove them aside in favor of lipstick red and neon pink pairs. Likewise, that basic black bag which accompanies you to each and every outing deserves a rest while you trot out a satchel saturated in the most tropical hues. Moreover, your wrist will look forlorn without a bracelet of jazzy multicolored gems. Quite frankly, the fashion world could use some psychedelic inspiration after seasons of the palest pastels and deepest shades of noir.

Headlining the trend are Valentino's Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, who injected a healthy dose of rainbow hues into the design house's beloved Rockstud collection for spring. Studded slingbacks with vivid stripes offer an unexpected splash of color at the foot, while a chevron-striped shoulder bag is more overt.

Likewise, Christian Louboutin's Cataclou wedges are emblazoned with polychromatic metal studs which look like avant-garde candy and the accompanying Aliosha Pouch is a lesson in chic, geometric, multicolored minimalism. Pop on Lizzie Fortunato's Color Riot Bracelet and you could very well be mistaken for a modern iteration of the '60s go-go dancer.

What takes the trend into the 21st century, however, is that the rainbow hues are confined to strategic accents, gems, and footwear. The moment you decide to strap on Valentino's Rockstuds with a matching mini dress, the couture houses making the rainbow trend into a global sensation relinquish any responsibility for your wardrobe choices. However, a draped white maxi dress or LBD is the ideal canvas for eccentric, whimsical accessories, so exercise your sartorial freedom this spring by choosing a kaleidoscope of jewelry and footwear—even if the rest of your look is spartan.
