Your New Style Inspo/Favorite Actress is Here

by Jodie Layne

You've probably been seeing Katherine Waterston's face in movie previews on the regular for the past couple of months without really knowing it. Her repeated reaction to the endless question about her nude scene (“All acting is nudity[...] It’s all vulnerable, and a little bit scary,”) may have peaked my interest, but her style both on and off the red carpet caught my eye. Waterston has existed relatively under the radar during her 11-year film career, but she's likely to gain notoriety in 2015 for her starring role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s "Inherent Vice" (an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel) — and her on-point picks in the style department should very well earn her a reputation as a style icon, too.

The tailoring in the pieces she wears is impeccable; the colors are mostly neutral; and she's yet to be photographed on the red carpet in a print — but don't mistake her minimalist sensibilities for boring. Her Altuzarra tuxedo jacket for the Inherent Vice premiere at the New York film festival featured a plunging U-neckline, and is the perfect encapsulation of her minimalist, feminine signature style. Sexy and femme, sure — but never in a way that feels overly contrived. Waterston's best looks are the ones that pair of-the-moment pieces with subdued hair and makeup, leaving her look polished but in an effortless kind of way.

The actress is already being flagged by red carpet style-watchers as one to keep an eye on, and with awards season coming up, it's the perfect time to look back on some of Waterston's best looks yet:

This shoulder-baring Christian Dior number gown is the perfect embodiment of Waterson's classic beauty and effortless glamour.

This look was as daring as it was chic. It should be the look that caught your attention.

Demure and feminine in Elie Saab, Waterson remained gorgeous and ladylike, but still minimalist.

Somehow Waterston manages to make mostly neutral colors and classic silhouettes look modern and fresh in this red-carpet look.

Her causal style is gamine-like and the addition of white Chuck Taylors keeps this look impeccably cool.

I mean, she's wearing a floor-length black lace gown that screams glamour; but she pairs it with a playful, round zippered clutch and tousled hair that scream carefree. It's genius.

And these high-waisted pants are stunning paired with a delicate printed top!
