You Won't Recognize Your Fave Stars on 'W's Covers

by Sienna Fantozzi

You may think you know this year's award season front runners, I mean, how could you miss the tiny, adorable Reese Witherspoon, or Amy Adams with her long, mermaid red hair — but then again, you haven't seen their latest magazine cover. W Magazine released their annual movie issue, and your favorite silver screen stars look almost completely unrecognizable.

The issue, shot by photographer Tim Walker, features seven covers with this season's standout movie performances, including Reese Witherspoon, Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Shailene Woodley, and Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch. (I mean, go big or go home I guess.)

The concept for the shoot, the 70's free love aesthetic and David Hockney paintings and photographs, translates surprisingly a lot less cheesey than it reads, though it does render some of the most well-known faces in the world virtually indiscernible (and for those who do resemble more familiar versions of themselves, there's just all kinds of wack-a-doo going on in their shoots. Just hold tight until you see Bradley Cooper).

So let's rank these amazing covers from most to least recognizable, and see if you have any trouble detecting these stars in disguise.

1. Julianne Moore

This one is fairly simple. You can tell it's Julianne even under the spider lashes and sweet mohawk. She's herself — just a more, um, colorful version of herself.

2. Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch

The Imitation Game duo might retain their classic features, but I mean, this will kind of haunt your dreams. Sinister much?

3. Bradley Cooper

He looks like some kind of seriously inappropriate ring leader.

4. Emma Stone

Stone may be one of fashion's favorite it girls, but in this shoot, she just looks like a downright creepy doll.

5. Reese Witherspoon

This one's more in the aesthetic than the actual features, because it's so rare to see Miss Witherspoon without a big, bright smile on her face. But she did tell us — she's not America's sweetheart.

6. Amy Adams

David Bowie starred in a movie this year? Oh, wait.

7. Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley or Daniel Radcliffe dressed as a mime? You decide.
