Comedy Central's 'Another Period' Sounds Hilarious

by Kenya Foy

If there's any type of show that combines absurd story lines and over-the-top antics more sufficiently than reality TV, that honor would have to go to reality show parodies. For example, the comedic formula worked extremely well with Paul Scheer's original Hulu series The Hotwives of Orlando , which was practically better than the show it mocked, and judging by the fact that the Hotwives are returning for another season, plenty of viewers shared those sentiments. For anyone who can't get enough of the mockery, Comedy Central has introduced Another Period , which is basically an antiquated spin on reality shows that promises to bring the drama and the laughs.

With Ben Stiller as the executive producer, Another Period is a 10-episode series set at the turn of the 20th century and revolves around the lives of the Bellacourts, the proud and obscenely wealthy first family of Newport, RI. Mad Men's Christina Hendricks will play the role of a servant, and Jeremy Renner and Paget Brewster will also have starring roles. During the Television Critics Association press tour, Stiller described the show as a "mix of tones in terms of the comedy coming from this sort of reality show vibe and also this anachronistic thing that is going on too," He then summed it up by saying, "It's also just really stupid at times too."

Well, that sounds pretty close to quite a few of the reality TV characters we've come to know and loathe, right? The only difference is that given turn-of-the-century setting, Another Period will be devoid of Botox parties, snarky comments about who looks better in a bikini, and thankfully no characters with terribly misguided aspirations of becoming a pop star. Apparently there will be plenty of action, only the huge reality TV blowouts that typically take place at charity events or in fancy restaurants will probably go down within the confines of a sprawling estate.

As of now, Another Period doesn't have an exact air date, but it's scheduled to debut in the summer and sounds like it'll definitely be worth the watch.
