Melissa McCarthy's Golden Globes Dress = Important

Both 2013 and 2014 were big years for Melissa McCarthy. Everything she starred in — from Identity Thief to The Heat to her signature show Mike and Molly — turned to gold. She's joined the ranks of respected and adored women in comedy, made plans to launch her own plus-size fashion line, donned the cover of Elle (albeit a rather controversial cover), and even rocked a custom Marchesa gown at the Emmys. And through it all, she's become an adored comedienne, a recognized style icon and a strong voice for women in media. And so it came as no surprise to me that she was chosen to present an award at the 2015 Golden Globes. Who better to have by your side when celebrating excellence in film and television?

I will admit that McCarthy's weight loss last year stunned me. It made me confused and kind of angry and definitely sad — but not at her. Never at her. Rather, at the intense and narrow beauty ideals that permeate Hollywood, and the rest of the world — the beauty ideals that make it so that even a profound voice in body positivity isn't safe from the pressure. But did I stop loving her? No way. Did I still count down to see her red carpet ensemble at the Golden Globes? You bet. Am I obsessed with the fact that she wore a "custom, chop shop" dress made from items in her own closet? Irrevocably.

It's difficult for me not to continue to associate Gilmore Girls' Sookie St. James with McCarthy herself. Not just because the latter played the former (duh!) but because both are so spectacularly well-dressed. This gown and the fact that it's a DIY project (made with the assistance of her stylist) proves, once more, that no matter her size, McCarthy knows she's worthy of all the glitz and glam and beauty that the world (not just the fashion world) has to offer. And that's a vital lesson that all women should learn. Not to mention that she's teaching us all to value the beauty in crafting!

And, um, did you notice the added tie-esque feature? I didn't think this woman could be any more adorable. Clearly I was wrong.
