'Boardwalk Empire' Gets a Fifth Chance

I'm pretty inclined to just say "no shit" and leave this post like that, but in the interest of journalism, I should probably include a little more info about this news item than just that. According to Entertainment Weekly, HBO has officially renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fifth season only three weeks after the fourth season premiere, and less than a week after Bobby Cannavale took home an Emmy award in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category for his role as Gyp Rosetti last season.

Ratings-wise, Boardwalk Empire has been averaging a little over 2 million viewers per episode live this season, which is just about on par with last season. Across all platforms — that is, OnDemand viewings, and HBO Go streaming — the fourth season is averaging about 7.5 million viewers, making it one of HBO's most well-performing shows.

The series stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, a gangster in New Jersey, and was created by Terence Winter. In addition to Cannavale's surprise win, the series took home four Creative Arts Emmy awards.

Now I can say it. HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fifth season, because: No shit.

Boardwalk Empire airs on Sundays at 9 PM on HBO.
