The Viral Gay Dads Are Back In An Awesome Way

by Emma Cueto

You may remember around this time last year, a picture of two gay dads doing their daughters' hair went viral and was perceived as generally awesome by non-awful people everywhere. And now we are in for a treat because those dads are part of Nikon's "I Am Generation Image" campaign. And the video, which not only features dads Kordale and Kaleb but also their adorable three kids, is every bit as awesome as you'd expect.

When Kordale and Kaleb's photo with their daughters went viral last year, it went a long way towards disrupting a lot of stereotypes — the idea that gay men can't be masculine, for example, or that gay men can't be good parents to daughters, or that black men are necessarily absent fathers. And the new video does even more.

"We just want people to know that we're normal," Kordale and Kaleb explain. They live in Atlanta with their three kids, ages eight, seven, and six — and every morning they get up at 5:30 to get their kids breakfast and do their daughters' hair. And as they point out, "Parents that can get up at 5:30 and do their daughters hair, no matter who they are, that's a family."

And from the looks of it, this is a pretty awesome family. So even though I remain as skeptical of advertising as ever, some kudos are due to Nikon for signal boosting their story, and their beautiful version of a normal family.
