This Wasn't What the Sheriff's Office Ordered

by Alicia Lu

Sometimes, mistakes can feel more right than the outcome we intended. Such was the case when a rug company sent a Florida sheriff's office rugs reading "In Dog We Trust." Clearly, the phrase was supposed to be of a holier variety, but can't they see that this message is even better? Apparently, they didn't because the administration decided to ditch the canine-friendly rugs when they discovered the typo. How dare they? This misprint was like a really ironic case of Divine Intervention, and those mats are the tiny miracles resulting from it. If liking these dog rugs is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

About two months ago, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office received two new rugs that they proudly displayed in the administration building. The identical mats were a deep pine green emblazoned with the Pinellas County Sheriff's bold black and yellow star-shaped emblem. However, the best part of the rug was the small-printed message inside the crest: "In Dog We Trust."

Yes! I do trust in Dog, whoever this holy being may be. For someone who's not religious at all whatsoever, I think I would let Dog show me the way. Nothing against God or anything, but Dog just sounds like a more reliable spiritual leader, kind of like he or she could be my...best friend?

The mats, which were $500 each, were immediately rolled up and stored out of sight when a deputy on security duty discovered the error on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office told WFTS Tampa Bay that the misprint was made by rug manufacturer American Floor Mats, who is currently working on reprinting new mats with the intended message.

But all of this raises the very important question: why?

Does the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office not trust in dogs? What do they have against man's favorite companion? What did our canine friends ever do to them? And most importantly, what will happen to those brilliant miracle mats?

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, many are wondering the same thing, and some have even offered to buy them.

One person wrote, "By any chance are the typo's rugs up for sale? or they could go in the K-9 unit ... just a thought." That's not a bad idea.

In the meantime, here's hoping that when the corrected mats come back they read "In Doge We Trust."
