Champion x Urban Outfitters Channels Health Goth

by Sienna Fantozzi

Classic, American sportswear is about to get a high fashion reboot. Champion USA is collaborating with Urban Outfitters, so get ready to trade in your plain white tees and zip up fleece for a slightly edgier take on active wear.

Champion, designing staple activewear since 1919, partnered with Capsule designers for a line called 'Champion Select', which will be sold at Urban Outfitters starting January 26th. Modeled by Luka Sabbat and Imaan Hamman, the collection features items for both men and women, designed by three emerging designers from all around the world — Timo Weiland (New York City), Wood Wood (Copenhagen), and Craig Green (London). So American sportswear is not only getting a style makeover — it's also getting a global reboot. The designers combined Champion's heritage with their own unique aesthetic to create pieces that are nostalgic for the brand's history, while at the same time bringing Champion into the stratum of fashion today.

The collection certainly has an attitude to it, with most of it being all black (a few pieces are grey), and merging the old with the new — vintage varsity jackets with wide leg sweats, a tank dress with a thigh high slit, futuristic fabric and shapes. It's athletic wear reimagined, updated, ready to blend with today's most current styles — health goth apparently at the top of that list.
