Chris Hemsworth's Non-'Thor' Awakening

by Alanna Bennett

When you've strapped on a cape and some tight pants and played a superhero for American audiences, any non-superhero undertakings may fail in comparison when it comes down to the glory of the box office. The exception to this rule is Ryan Reynolds. Sorry, Ryan Reynolds. In the non-Ryan Reynolds category, though, Chris Hemsworth is learning this week that non-superhero flicks don't always rake in billions of dollars like The Avengers did. It's kind of a humble-brag, though, because Rush still took second place at the box office, behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 followed the tradition of adorable animation movies making bank this weekend by raking in $9.3 million on Friday. Rush — Hemsworth's car racing biopic team-up with Ron Howard — came in a rather distant second with $3.7 million. By Sunday they had $35 million and $10.3 million, respectively.

Rush's box office are hardly a disappointment at number two, but it's a pretty stark contrast to Thor's opening weekend, which hit every other movie at the time with a handy hit of mjolnir with $65 million its first weekend. Then again, biopics and superhero movies? They're like apples and oranges, or 80s hair and tyrannical aliens.
