How to Get 8 Celebs' Signature Lips

by Miki Hayes

These days, when we think about high-profile pouts (is that something we think about without being prompted?) minds generally turn toward Kylie Jenner's lips, the youngest of the Kardashian Klan. And although I can't think of a time (or at least wasn't around for a time) when there has been more obsession and critique over a pair of lips, Jenner's aren't the first to make people take notice. Whether it's a signature color or a signature shape, ladies like Marilyn Monroe and Angelina Jolie have prompted desires for replication of both lipstick shades and pout shapes. Because I can't possibly be the only lipstick junkie there is, I'm here to break down some of the most famous lips in recent history so we can do just that: replicate them.

After some pretty thorough investigating (if I do say so myself), I've come up with the average appearance of lip shape and color for eight ladies: Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, Dita Von Teese, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Katharine Hepburn, Gwen Stefani, and of course Kylie Jenner. Now keep in mind that my replication of these lip looks might appear different since they're, well, on my face, and I don't happen to look like any of these ladies. BUT. The integrity has been kept for the general shape and color. So if you're over Kylie Jenner's lips (or even if you're not), here are some other iconic and covetable lip looks (and how to steal them).

Marilyn Monroe

While there are many celebs who are known for consistently rocking a red lip, Marilyn Monroe was one of the first stars to propel the popularity of red lipstick among the masses. She showed off her favorite reds on very full lips with a slightly distinguished cupid's bow.

Get her lip look by lining or slightly over-lining the lips with a red liner. If you have a defined cupid's bow, try to even it out a bit — it shouldn't be straight across, but just a slight dip. Then fill in your lips with the liner, and top everything off with a true-red lipstick in a cream formula.

Angelina Jolie

Is there currently a more famous pair of lips than Angelina Jolie? (Maybe Kylie Jenner, but we'll get to that). The actress tends to prefer a nude lip and often opts for a bit of gloss on her Marilyn-like shaped pout.

Start by lining or over-lining the lips with a nude liner, keeping rounded edges on both the top and bottom lips and softly defining the cupid's bow. Then simply fill in the lips with a peachy-nude gloss in a cream formula.

Dita Von Teese

Everything about burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese's pin-up style beauty is classic. Especially so is her fire-engine red lip which is made unique by her wider, defined cupid's bow.

Get this look by lining or slightly underlining the lips with a red liner, making sure to form crisp, straight edges for the wide "V" cupid's bow. Then just fill in lips with the liner, and top it off with a darker red lipstick with a slightly glossy finish.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is a makeup-repeater. She loves simple black eyeliner and a mauve lipstick on her rounded lips.

To steal her look, start by lining your lips with a nude or mauve liner making sure to draw straight across your cupid's bow. Then simply fill in your lips with a mauve-toned lipstick in a cream or matte formula.

Rihanna

Although Rihanna likes to switch it up a little more than some of these other ladies, she sure knows how to rock a red lip. (I mean she even rebranded MAC's cult Ruby Woo as her own RiRi Woo!)

To get her look, line the lips with a red liner, making sure to draw a deep cupid's bow (the center of your pout should look like the top of a heart). Then fill in the lips with the liner first, and top it off with a matte red lipstick. Make the finish extra-matte by blotting or setting with a translucent powder when you've finished application.

Katharine Hepburn

Although actress Katharine Hepburn was primarily photographed and filmed in black and white, colored photos show she favored brown-toned reds.

Start by lining or underlining the lips with a brown or red liner. For the top lip, you'll want to draw a mostly-straight cupid's bow with the highest points of the lips being closer to the outer edges than the center of the lips. Then fill in lips with the liner, and top it all off with a brown-toned red lipstick with a cream formula.

Gwen Stefani

Another lady who loves her some red is Gwen Stefani. While she wears a variety of hues, the singer and designer seems to prefer orange-tone reds.

This look can be achieved by lining the lips with a red liner, making sure to define the cupid's bow with a small, sharp "V." Then fill in the lips with the liner first, and follow with an orange-red lipstick in a cream or satin-matte finish.

Kylie Jenner

The youngest Kardashian, whose lips garnered all sorts of attention in 2014 (and show no signs of slowing) is clearly a big fan of overdrawn, rose-brown lips.

Get her signature look by over-lining the top and bottom lips with a brown-toned liner, drawing either straight across the cupid's bow or keeping it ever-so-slightly defined. Since Kylie tends to only use a liner, all you have to do to complete this look is simply fill in the lines you've drawn with the same liner.
