Listen to Katy Perry's 'By the Grace of God'

by Alanna Bennett

No boob whipped-cream in sight, Katy Perry debuted a somber new song from her upcoming album Prism this week. Called "By the Grace of God," Perry's new single pretty much lays bare the heartbreak she felt over her divorce from Russell Brand. As Perry said in a recent interview with Billboard, "If [you] want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs."

Perry, who split with Brand in 2011 after 14 months of marriage, does indeed let the song speak for itself; the lyrics in "By the Grace of God" make it pretty evident how she felt in the time after the relationship crumbled:

Thought I wasn't enough, found out I wasn't so tough laying on the bathroom floor/ We were living on a fault line, and I felt the fault was all mine/ Couldn't take it anymore/ By the grace of god I pick myself back up/ I put one foot in front of the other and I looked in the mirror and decided to stay/ Wasn't gonna let love take me out that way.

She later pays homage to those who helped her through the hard time, singing "I thank my sister for keeping my head above the water/When the truth was like swallowing sand/now every morning hope there is no more mourning/I can finally see myself again."

We're not even gonna try to crack any (more) jokes about plastic dresses here; stars can experience pain and heartbreak just like the rest of us (I hear it's that whole also-being-human thing). But when Perry's in pain, we get a pretty heartfelt break-up ballad to blast.
