#SmearForSmear Raises Cervical Cancer Awareness

by May Sofi

I am a huge fan of celebrities using their fame and power for a good cause, rather than just for self-promotion. That is exactly what Georgia May Jagger, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne, and Suki Waterhouse have done by participating in #SmearForSmear, a social media campaign to raise awareness for cervical cancer.

#SmearForSmear aims to emphasize how important it is for women to get regular Pap Smears, hence the name. Participants post photos of themselves with smeared lipstick to symbolize the life-saving test. According to Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, which is responsible for organizing the campaign, cervical cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women under 35, and it is actually one of the few that can be prevented. Taking a cue from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, they (cleverly) turned to social media to make this important matter go viral.

Just about anyone can get involved in the movement. All you have to do is up your selfie game by adding some bold lipstick, smearing it with your hands, and using the hashtag #SmearForSmear — easy enough right? With such a small effort, you can contribute to a crucial cause that affects women just like us. We all know you're taking those selfies anyway so why not help fight cervical cancer at the same time?

Here are selfies of some of the celebrities who participated in #SmearForSmear.
