Versace Gets Raunchy For Couture Week

Last Sunday, Versace took its spring couture collection to the runway in Paris and oh la la, did the French get an eye full... The always edgy Donatella Versace, who's known for her revealing looks, apparently took a cue from the current red carpet trend of risqué cutouts and plunging necklines (here's looking at you, Kate Hudson! Twice in two weeks, you brave woman), and sniped, sniped, sniped at the fabric, leaving painfully precise open silts, graphic cutouts, sheer transparent overlay, and nearly naked models behind.

We've already talked about the sexy and smoky, mod-inspired makeup at the show, but I was honestly surprised to see that the models' eyes were even noticed with all the barely-covered butts and potential nip-slips getting in the way. In my opinion, crazy cut-outs are always a tough trend to translate onto couture gowns, as they all too often make expensive look cheap (and turn sexy into sleazy). But these gowns were truly architectural works of art, with swirls of delicate fabric covering a breast there and revealing a sliver of thigh there, black netting skimming over nipples but divulging practically everything else, and intricately beaded slips that left very little to the imagination — but with Donatella in the driver's seat, what else does a gal really need?

Of course, while Versace successfully translated the trend into their couture line, that doesn't necessarily mean that it can work for ready-to-wear. At least not for this girl. One wrong move and everyone gets a sneak peak of the goods... No bueno.
