Sam Smith Wins Grammy For Song Of The Year

by Lia Beck

It's one of the biggest awards of music's biggest night, and on Sunday, Feb. 8, Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" (Darkchild Version) won the Grammy for Song of the Year. This win isn't THAT surprising considering the song was probably played in every grocery store and car you entered over the past year, but it is when you consider the tough competition "Stay With Me" faced. Which is to say, four other songs that were played in every grocery store and car you entered over the past year.

"Stay With Me" beat out “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor (Written by Kevin Kadish & Meghan Trainor), “Chandelier” by Sia (Written by Sia Furler & Jesse Shatkin), “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift (Written by Max Martin, Shellback, & Taylor Swift), and “Take Me to Church” by Hozier (Written by Andrew Hozier-Byrne). Whew! What a tough category!

Of course, Song of the Year, is a songwriting category (as opposed to Record of the Year, which is an award for the performance of the song and its production), so along with Sam Smith, songwriters James Napier and William Phillips were awarded Grammys as well.

The win was one of Smith's four of the night. He was also awarded the highly coveted Best New Artist Grammy, Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour, and Record of the Year for "Stay With Me."
