Let the Crying Games Begin

by Lindsay Mannering

Sunday night's Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 5 reunion was eerie. There's no other way to describe it. It was as if everyone was just waiting to see if Teresa Giudice and Joe Giudice were going to admit that, holy shit, they could be going to jail, but instead of any hard-hitting questions aimed at the Giudices, part one of the reunion was focused mostly on Caroline Manzo's possibly-cheating husband, Melissa Gorga's ridiculous book, and the never-ending family feud between the Giudices and the Gorgas.

Despite the fact that we were forced to relive that epic ballroom battle between the Joes, during which Gorga's spray-on hair got on everything, the reaction and the conversation about the fight was under-heated and dull. It seemed like no one wanted to say anything bad about the pathologically lying Giudices since, you know, they're facing decades behind bars, but come on. If we can't call out liars on reality TV, where can we?

Andy Cohen's softballs might serve a greater good, though. Sunday night's reunion might have been lackluster, but perhaps Bravo wanted to wait to release the beast; a bit of delayed gratification, if you will. Since part one was so boring, maybe that means that parts two and three will be exponentially more dramatic and entertaining.

Judging from this sneak peek below, it's possible. Next Sunday, the cast finally shows some emotion. The Giudices still claim they have no idea why this is happening to them, but everyone else seems acutely aware of the consequences they face.

Side note: Do you remember with the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills had a special sit-down with Andy Cohen after Taylor's husband Russell Armstrong committed suicide? I wonder if the Jersey girls will do the same when a percentage of their cast is carted off to prison. Here's hoping.
