Stowaway Cosmetics Is Our Tiny Beauty Savior

by Catie Keck

If you’re anything like me, you’re sick and tired of packing around so many damn cosmetics — they’re added weight, they take up space, and they’re the perpetrators of powder stains at the bottom your favorite carry-all. Enter recently launched Stowaway Cosmetics, a startup for petite beauty products that eliminates the headache of bulky makeup packaging in favor of portability. Oh, and the best part? They’re cruelty-free, paraben-free, and phthalate-free — so yes, it may be time to consider switching your preferred beauty brand.

The pocket-sized line comes with reasonable price tags, too. Most of its products cost $10-22, and you can purchase a full set of makeup for a mere $75 (a super low cost when considering the average amount of money spent on each of the essentials in your cosmetics bag). As Fashionista notes, Stowaway follows the e-commerce business models of other startups like Warby Parker and Everlane, which cuts out the “middle man” and enables customers to purchase their products at lower price point -- a win/win for everyone involved.

The brand’s one immediate shortcoming is its slim selection of palettes. With only four options available for foundation and powder, Stowaway is likely to alienate a significant number of women. The company is still in its infancy, however, and will presumably expand its line after its initial launch. (Keep in mind here there’s only three shades of lipstick currently available on its website.)

Check out a WSJ Live interview with founders Julie Fredrickson and Chelsa Crowley below, and head here to peek at their teensy tiny beauty line.
