Why You Should Go Blonde, At Least Once

by Katie Patton

Hair color has gotten all sorts of crazy over the last couple of years: Kylie Jenner turned her locks turquoise just before Kimye’s wedding; Hailey Baldwin donned a messy lilac bob for a night of Lana Del Ray; Zosia Mamet went granny-chic with antique grey; Kelly Osbourne’s hair seems permanently purple and perfectly coiffed; and Nicole Richie’s fringe has absorbed colors ranging from bright blue and green to lavender and pop pink. It’s as if any notable trip to the salon ended with a do’ that was bright and bold. Don’t get me wrong, I too had an obsession with the pop color dye job, Pinning more teal and lavender looks than I care to admit. TBH, I’m still more preoccupied with a Jenner-esque hair color than the rest of the world is with Christian Grey, but since this isn’t a look that is easily adapted by someone with a 9-5 job and a dress code, I am going to have to back away from the hair chalk. Lucky for those of us who tend to experiment with colors ranging from medium blonde to dark brown, there seems to be a new hot hair trend: Enter a modern twist on the blonde bombshell.

Now, I know what you are thinking: "Blonde, how boring; flaxen-colored hair is nothing new and quite subtle in comparison to those colors that rival Strawberry Shortcake." Also, it’s not so easy for the natural brunettes among us to attend the platinum party. I mean, what do we do with our eyebrows? Believe me, I fully understand that the struggle is real — there was a two-year span in college where I forced the blonde issue and there is, unfortunately, photographic evidence. However, there have been a number of celebrities with traditionally deep, dark heads of brown hair who have recently transitioned into a modern blonde that seems fresh, fun and perfect for spring. A forgiving range of blonde with warm undertones, as seen on some of our favorite fashion and beauty icons, gives us a handful of reasons to find out if blondes really do have more fun.

While Sofia Vergara has recently shown off copy cat worthy colors ranging from black-brown to golden chestnut, it has been a while since we have seen the Modern Family star with locks this light. Vergara stunned on the SAG Awards red carpet with a multi-dimensional caramel color that proves even brunette loyalists can transition into flaxen-haired vixens.

Sophia Bush also got the blonde hair don't care memo, debuting a lighter, brighter faux bob for this year's SAG Awards. The buttery color is just about the lightest shade we have ever seen on our forever Brooke Davis and Chicago PD lady crush, and it is drop-dead gorgeous. The warm undertones are the perfect compliment to her naturally dark eyebrows, further proof that anyone can brighten up their color for a little Hollywood glam.

LIGHT IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES

Undoubtedly, the most talked about Zendaya hair news of late has been the super chic pixie cut she unveiled at the Grammy's and brought back for NYFW. However, before she debuted the oh-so-short style, she spiced up her dark tendrils with heavy honey colored highlights. The pop singer/jack of all musical trades' Instagram photo is the inspiration image to take to the colorist if you want to dip your toe in the blonde water.

JET BLACK TO BELIEVABLE BLONDE

Kylie Jenner, owner of the turquoise dye job heard round the world, recently posted this doe-eyed, pouty-lipped, behind the scenes picture from her LOVE Magazine shoot, for which she went fully blonde. While it was revealed that her flaxen fringe was merely a wig, the internet unanimously agreed that Jenner was a beautiful blonde bombshell. The fact that Jenner can go from Kardashian-black to bright teal to slightly ashy, yet golden blonde and not miss a beat, is inspiration for us all to find our just-right shade of blonde this season.

OMBRE OUT, TORTOISESHELL IN

Ombre hair, you were well loved by many, but just like the 2014 playlist staple "All About That Bass," you're a little overplayed. While hair that started out brown and ended up approximately two shades lighter actually had a longer shelf life than most beauty trends and certainly served us well, all good things must come to an end. Fear not, for Refinery 29 recently reported that London-based hair colorist to the stars, Jack Howard, has announced that ecaille hair, a.k.a. tortoiseshell hair, is swooping in to replace the tried and true color fade. Tortoiseshell hair is exactly like it sounds — a lovely mix of warm blondes with a few safety browns thrown in there for the base. In other words, this new trend is yet another reason to turn your locks mid-tone blonde this spring. Also, Howard names Gisele Bundchen, Khloe Kardashian and Jessica Alba as early adopters of the trend, which means we're looking to some of the best heads of hair in the business for inspiration.

Pink hair is so passe, don't you think? Blonde is taking over as the color du jour. Even if you are still a little jealous of the hair freedom your favorite celebs have, put that green envy on the back burner and warm up those locks during your next trip to the salon. Regardless of the natural color you are working with, I totally see blonde bombshell in your future.
