Is Harrison Wells Working Alone On 'The Flash'?

by Angelica Jade Bastién

Sometimes it feels like Harrison Wells is in two places at once. Now that we are certain that he is the Reverse-Flash, certain episodes of The Flash make it clear that we need to reassess his villainy. We have seen him trying to gain Barry's abilities, but for the most part they are stuck in the suit and don't last long with him when he's out of it. Could the Reverse-Flash have a partner? Re-watching the midseason finale, "The Man in the Yellow Suit," it definitely feels like Harrison Wells may not be the only Reverse-Flash. There are too many questions with unclear answers. How did Wells beat himself up as the Reverse-Flash in front of everyone? Why did the Reverse-Flash spare the life of Iris' boyfriend, Detective Eddie Thawne? How is Harrison Wells the same Reverse-Flash who totally schooled Barry when he doesn't seem to have a good grasp on handling super speed? I think Harrison Wells is working with himself, literally.

In the comics, Professor Zoom is the second Reverse-Flash and considered Barry Allen's most fearsome antagonist. Professor Zoom loves to meddle. Not only did he travel back in time to kill Nora Allen, he also tends to disrupt his own past. He has used his powers to completely rewrite history. If you think Reverse-Flash has been a complete jerk on The Flash, check out the comics — he's much worse. How? He erases his younger brother and rivals from history, traumatizes a crush so that she's institutionalized as a child, and manipulates his younger self.

I think the reason why it seems like there two Reverse-Flashes is because Wells is not working alone. I bet Harrison Wells is working with a version of his past or future self to pull off the endgame he's always cryptically referencing. This aligns with the Reverse-Flash of DC Comics.

The second option? Eddie Thawne is the Reverse-Flash too. While previously I have thought Eddie was a total good guy, we still have no explanation as to why the Reverse-Flash spared his life. When the character was first cast, many fans, like myself, speculated that he would be Reverse-Flash since his name greatly resembles one of the aliases of the villain in the comics, Eobard Thawne. When interviewed by TV Guide The Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said, "His name is not an accident. Eddie's connection to the Reverse Flash lore is going to pay off big time in the back half of the year."

Could Eddie Thawne turn out to be the Reverse-Flash we saw spare his life earlier in the season? Could his future self be involved with Wells? While The Flash has been loyal to the ethos of the comics it's based on, the show has also been smart in its deviations. Having Wells working with a future version of himself or Eddie could add some interesting drama to the show while surprising even long-time comic fans.

Plus, with Joe West investigating Wells and the upcoming time travel episode, we're bound to learn a lot more about how Wells is pulling everything off.
