Own a Piece of Oprah

by Alicia Lutes

Where Oprah goes, the world follows. After all, Oprah Winfrey is patron saint of everything, the first living female superhero and wonderwoman to end all wonderwomens. The hero queen goddess of boss ladies and Nefertiti, or something, though, is tired of her belongings. And so she's decided it's time to bid sweet, sweet adieu to her not-so-favorite-anymore things. And holy shit, some moms are going to be going berserk like Miley Cyrus at the realization that there's no such thing as originality anymore.

People flock like well-trained and be-doilied houseplants wherever our Lady of Borpo (thanks, Liz Lemon) decides the winds of time have turned her towards. And you know what? It's one of her favorite things. More so than the stuff she's getting rid of — all those teeny little mementoes that prove Oprah's just one of us.

Like her collection of English George Smith upholstered furniture, or that 18th century Louis XVI chest with an estimated value of between $30,000 and $50,000. Or her set of embroidered yellow silk Louis XV armchairs that are worth between $20,000 and $40,000. You know — the simple, good stuff you find at your local flea market or Pottery Barn.

So, if you've got a couple extra thou to drop on some housewares while Borpes gets her renovation on (her modest, 23,000 square foot Montecito, Calif. home is currently undergoing a total interior overhaul, hence the auction), head to the Kaminski Auctions event on November 2 at the Santa Barbara Polo Club and Racquet Club in Carpinteria, California. Or, if you've got an extra $100 lying around feel free to ask me to go and take in all the sights, sounds, stains, and smells of OprahLife. Besides, proceeds from the auction go to benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation College Fund, aiding the female graduates from her South African school attend college.

Besides: there's also going to be stuff there from her other houses in Maui, Chicago, and... Indiana homes. I'm guessing Indiana is where Stedman's closet space is located.
