Fringe Is Def Going to Be a Fall Fashion Staple

by Melanie Richtman

You know how in the Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Priestley declares “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking” in the most deadpan way possible? Well I’m starting to think that the current version of that statement would be “Fringe for fall? Groundbreaking.” Don’t get me wrong, I love fringe. It's just that I think it's starting to become synonymous with fall in the fashion world, which, by the w I’m totally okay with it.

Last year’s fall collections from Michael Kors, Derek Lam and Tommy Hilfiger all featured fringe pieces. From oversized fringe-covered sweaters (Lam) to long fringe skirts (Kors), fringe quickly became one of the most talked about runway trends. This year’s fall collections are no different.

This season, Tom Ford’s fall 2015 collection featured an array of fringe pieces, including skirts with fringe hems, purses with fringe accents and skirts covered in head-to-toe fringe. Burberry Prorsum took fringe to the next level, lining ponchos, jackets and collars, and covering bags and shoes in the ornamental accent. And that’s only highlights from two shows. One can only imagine that the fringe craze will continue throughout London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week. I can’t even fathom the idea of Isabel Marant showing a collection without fringe.

To stay ahead of the game and to ready your closet for fall, here are 7 ways to add some fringe to your current wardrobe.

1. Open Fringe Cardigan

This American Eagle cardigan has just the right amount of fringe to be trendy without looking like you're trying too hard, which is always a win in my book.

2. Fringed Skirt

This long, fringed skirt from H&M is like a skirt with a high-slit, but more alluring and mysterious.

3. Flying Fringe Sweater

I like the way this sweater moves when you spin. It's unexpectedly cool.

4. Long Fringe Suede Jacket

Add a western edge to your fringe collection with this suede, kimono-esque jacket from Zara.

5. Jeffery Campbell Dillon Leather Fringe Heel

These Jeffery Campbell heels are so amazing. While they're probably not practical for fall, they will definitely be wearable for spring. Also, they're just too cool to pass up.

6. Chevron Stripe Fringe Necklace

If you can't commit to adding more than one fringe piece to your wardrobe, just buy a necklace. That way you can rock fringe with a variety of outfits, whenever you want.

7. Crop Top With Fringing

Crop Top With Fringing, $52, ASOS

Fringe crop tops are like the wading pool of crop tops. Your stomach is still exposed, but you can feel a little more comfortable since it is kind of covered. "Kind of" being the key phrase there.
