Plastic Surgeons Say Everyone Wants A Kim K Booty

by Catie Keck

Big bottomed women, rejoice. Last year’s fascination with large derrieres continues to saturate the pop culture psyche -- so much so, in fact, that plastic surgery saw a 98 percent increase in butt implants and an additional 44 percent increase in butt lift operations. “With stars like Khloe Kardashian and Iggy Azalea regularly showing off their assets on social media, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez both singing about butts, and even posh fashion bible Vogue declaring it the Era of the Booty,” writes Yahoo’s Sara Bliss, “it’s no wonder that women are coveting a curvier backside.”

So what’s fueling the fevered pursuit of big butts? Yahoo spoke with the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Dr. Scott Glasberg, who says, “Media, television, and celebrities like J.Lo and Kim Kardashian are driving the increase.” And big butts are not without their benefits; for instance, a recent study from the University of Oxford suggests a big booty is better for your brain (because science). But that certainly doesn’t mean that butt augmentation is the best idea, health wise. As with all body modification procedures, there are risks involved. Dr. Rick Rosen, a Connecticut plastic surgeon, told Yahoo he will not perform buttock implant surgeries because he finds "the risks are too high." They are also incredibly expensive.

So the takeaway here is that if you’re born with a big butt, our ever-shifting societal standards for beauty happen to momentarily favor your figure. But really, to quote Bustle’s Kat George, “[I]t’s high time we started celebrating our bodies the way they are, because we’re stuck in them, and as the old saying goes, ‘If you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with.’” Amen.
