Is There A Bieber/Jepsen Collaboration On The Way?

by Chelsea Mize

The time has come, Jepsonites. Carly Rae Jepsen's music video for "I Really Like You" has finally been released after much anticipation. Oddly enough, the music video features Justin Bieber and Tom Hanks alongside the "Call Me Maybe" singer. The inclusion of Tom Hanks and Justin Bieber in the video was hyped long before the music video's release and the odd collaboration of between the trio had everyone (or, at least, some people) speculating on if this indicates a musical collaboration in the works between Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Bieber — like a song, perhaps?

Surprisingly, it is Tom Hanks who debuted as the real star of the show. "I Really Like You," a.k.a. Big 2.0, features Tom Hanks as a teenage boy stuck in the body of a 50-year-old man with an affinity for pop music. Well OK — just kidding (but seriously, a Big sequel should definitely happen after this music video): Actually, Tom Hanks plays Jepsen's love interest in the early stages of a relationship; the music video follows him around New York City as he lip syncs along to Jepsen's latest jam.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber takes a backseat role in the music video, appearing briefly as part of Jepsen and Hanks' dancing entourage (you might even say he's a bit of a third wheel onto Jepsen and Hanks' dancing romance). From the get go, Bieber's minimal role in the music video had my suspicions on high alert. Bieber is basically the Kanye West of Canadian teenage boys; his ego is bigger than his height in centimeters.

Justin Bieber is not a low-key type of guy. We all know Bieber loves to be the center of attention. I can just imagine Bieber on set of the "I Really Like You" music video shoot, silently berating himself: "You're Bieber. You are Justin Bieber. You're really gonna let this guy upstage you? You're gonna let Forrest Gump be the big dog while you're in the background dancing like a fool?"

This has got me thinking that Bieber's cameo in "I Really Like You" suggests bigger things — perhaps the Biebs was willing to take a backseat to Tom Hanks because his moment in the sun with Carly Rae Jepsen is yet to come... maybe in the form of a musical collaboration?!

Though there's no confirmation on that just yet, we do know Jepsen has been hustling to get the best people in music to contribute to her album. Continuing in the spirit of collaboration, maybe Bieber's cameo in "I Really Like You" is actually a teaser for an epic duet featuring our two favorite Canadians.

I have a few reasons why a Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen collaboration should happen.

Canadian Solidarity

A Justin Bieber/Carly Rae Jepsen duet would be a fantastic representation of some of the epic talent we have streaming out of Canada. Maybe, just maybe, Jepsen will continue down the 'Canadians making obscure music video cameos' path and have Drake weeping silently in the background as Seth Rogen and Celine Dion play hockey in the background of her future homage to Canada.

It Would Be a Nice "Thank You" to Bieber

When you're trying to break out as the next hit pop artist, an endorsement from a musical hard-hitter can be just what you need to get the ball rolling. Carly Rae knows this well, as Bieber's Twitter endorsement of Jepsen in 2012 helped her garner international attention and obtain a deal with his record label. A collaboration on her next album would be a lovely "thank you" to Bieber for his hand in her success thus far.

They Are Just Perfectly Adorable Together

Jepsen and Bieber make a cute duo. They are similar heights, of similar backgrounds, and similarly make music that plays on the radio so much that it makes your ears bleed. Just out of sheer cuteness alone, these two Canadian twinsies need to do a song together ASAP.
