Meryl & Charlie On Which Celebs Should Play Them

by Alyse Whitney

Every story worth telling seems to be made into a movie these days, and one of the most captivating tales of 2014 was ice dancing pair Meryl Davis and Charlie White's Olympic win at Sochi. Since then, both skaters have tackled Dancing With the Stars — with Davis taking home the Mirror Ball with partner Maks Chmerkovskiy and White landing in fifth place with Sharna Burgess — and many other professional and personal milestones. When I caught up with the duo at airweave premium bedding topper’s flagship New York City store in SoHo (which they're the new brand ambassadors for) on Wednesday, they had interesting choices for which actors should play them if they ever get their own movie.

"I’m just a huge fan of Zooey Deschanel because she’s so cute and so quirky. I just think she’s amazing," Davis reveals. "I wouldn’t do her the disservice of thinking that we look alike, but I think she would be amazing."

White followed up with one he had ready in his back pocket. "Well, this is easy, because everyone gets us confused all the time: me and Ryan Reynolds. We’re essentially the same person," he jokes with a laugh. "But no, actually my fiancée [Tanith Belbin] has a crush on him, so I feel like I have to be him." That led to Davis pointing out that Reynolds is also her celebrity crush and White admitting, "I have a man crush on him too."

The two suggestions I made were Anna Kendrick for Davis and Evan Peters for White, which prompted him to pull out his phone to Google what Peters looks like. "People always tell him he looks like a young Colin Firth," Davis points out before we get a photo to load of Peters. "Oh yeah, totally. I see that," White agrees, although after some discussion about couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds playing them instead, he notes that that "they were made to be ice dancers."

Whether or not they get their own movie, the duo basically ruled out acting in their future. Although Davis says that they have been "approached about a couple of acting gigs before," White points out that it would "be another lifetime of work to get to a place that we would be comfortable [acting]." Davis drives that point home by bringing up another burning question: their Olympic future. "I think we would be disrespecting a craft like acting if we thought that we could just step in and be good at it," she says. "Acting is necessarily in our future, and I think at this point in our lives, we haven’t decided whether or not we’ll return to competition. But I think it’s about figuring out what is on the bucket list — instead of doing all of those things, it’s about looking at the world with fresh eyes and trying to figure out what those things may be."

For now, their immediate future is embarking on the Stars on Ice tour, something that makes them very happy that they are partnered with airweave. "What’s really nice [about airweave] is that we can bring the travel option with us when we’re on the road," Davis says. "We're in one city one day, another city the next day. Just knowing we’re going to go to bed and wake up feeling rested and have that consistent night of sleep is really invaluable to us."

Thankfully, seeing Davis and White on the ice — whether in competition or not — isn't the only exciting part of their futures. Both Olympians said they'd love to return to Dancing With the Stars , and Davis will be teaming up with partner Maks Chmerkovskiy at the Skating With the Stars Gala in NYC on April 13 (and then possibly again this summer at Chmerovskiy's SWAY: A Dance Trilogy show). Suffice it to say, no matter what this duo decides to do in their skating careers, they're not going away anytime soon.
